INDIA, Part 1

INDIA. India, with its mountain ranges, miles of beaches, marshlands, deserts, bays, and plateaus; floods, extremely low temperatures, extremely high temperatures, high winds, dryness, and humidity.  It is home to over 1.2 billion people.

Located in South Asia, India is one of the most populated countries in the world.  It has a total population of approximately 1,210,193,422 people which can then be broken up into more than 2,500 distinct people groups. The number of people in each people group ranges from less than thirty to over 80 million. The only country with more population than India is the country of China, which has a little over 88 million more people. However, the country of China is twice as big.

India has a total land area of approximately 1,269,219 (1.3 million) square miles, the equivalent of over 900 people per square mile. This doesn’t sound like much when one thinks of many average sized cities in the United States which have a population density of a couple thousand people per square mile, but take into consideration all of the rural areas of the United States. The population density for the entire U.S. is just over 87 people per square mile. This means that in comparison, Americans have 7 times more room than Indians. With that in mind, the growth rate of India is at an average 1.44% while the average growth rate of the U.S. is only 1%. So not only is there 7 times more people, but they are also growing almost 50% faster than we are.
